What is Zinc?

Zinc is a metal that falls into the scientific category of a metallic chemical element. It has the symbol Zn on the Periodic Table and is known as an "essential trace element" because very little zinc is required for human health as well as plant and microorganism life. Most zinc is located in the brian, muscles, bones, kidneys, and liver with the greatest concentrations of zinc being found in the prostate and parts of the eye. Zinc is very important when it comes to proper growth and maintenance within the human body as it plays a key role in the metabolism of RNA and DNA, but only a small amount is necessary on   a daily basis, around 15-milligrams is required per day. Zinc aids immune function, the process of wound healing, blood clotting, and much more.

Zinc Benefits

Some of the most common health benefits of zinc include the ability to:

Boost the immune system: aids the body in fighting the common cold (rhinovirus) and reducing the symptoms associated with the flu. 

Aid Eye Health: especially macular degenration, night blindness, and cataracts

Skin Health zinc can be used to treat acne, aging skin, herpes, wrinkles, and increase the speed at which skin wounds heal. 

Bone Strength: low zinc levels are associated with osteoporsis

Teeth Health: zinc is added to toothpastes and mouthwashes to help prevent the formation of dental plaque and gingivitis. 

Zinc Deficiency 

Symptoms of zinc dificiency include, but are not limited to, stunted growth, acute diarrhea, loss of apetite, hair loss, dry skin, low insulin levels, and slow wound healing. The proper amount of zinc can be consumed by eating various types of meats, seafood, dairy products, nuts, whole grains, or by consuming a zinc supplement.
