What Is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is the generic term given to the group of fat-soluable secosteroids that have the responsibility of internally absorbing and metabolizing calcium and phophate. The two most common and important types of vitamin D are vitamin D, called cholecalciferol, and vitamin D3, called ergocalciferol. When exposed to the sun, the human body is able to consume vitamin D, which is why vitamin D is nicknamed the "sunshine vitamin." Vitamin D can also be consumed via food, drinks, or supplements.

The list of benefits that vitamin D has to offer includes aiding the body's ability to absorb and metabolize other nutrtients, reducing the risk of osteoperosis and arthritis, regulating blood pressure, relieving body aches and pains, as well as improving overall cardiovascular health.

The easiest way for one to receive an adequate amount of vitamin D is by spending time outdoors in the sunlight. When exposed to the sun, the body is able to naturally produce vitamin D. To ensure you are receiving a healthy amount of vitamin D to prevent vitamin D deficiency, it is important to include foods in your diet that are high in vitamin D. Some common foods with high levels of vitamin D are: 

  • Fish
  • Cereals
  • Oysters
  • Caviar
  • Tofu
  • Soy Milk
  • Salami
  • Ham
  • Sausage
  • Eggs
  • Mushrooms
