What is Pomegranate?

Pomegranates have been around for many years and is commonly referred to as one of the oldest known fruits. Originating in Persia, pomegranates are eaten and enjoyed by people all over the world. The juice and seeds inside pomegranates are the only edible parts of the fruit due to the hard outter skin. It is more common for pomegrante to be eaten in solid form but pomegranate juice is becoming more popular after recent studies have concluded how healthy pomegrantaes are. Pomegranates are an amazing source of anti-oxidants, rich source of vitamin C, and has shown to improve heart health while providing many other amazing benefits for the body.

Pomegranate Benefits

Anti-Oxidant: Pomegranates are very rich in anti-oxidants, which helps prevent harmful oxidation from occuring within the body's bloodstream. This prevents the arteries from hardening, known as atherosclerosis. It also works to protect cells from the free radical damage that results from oxidation. It is impossible to completely prevent oxidation from occuring so proactively trying to prevent the often permanent damage is the best way to combat oxidation. Although you can’t prevent oxidation entirely by simply consuming pomegranates, it can help neutralize it. Anti-oxidants also help protect the skin from harmful UV rays coming from the sun. This prevents wrinkles from forming and helps keep the skin elastic.   

Cancer Prevention: The high level of anti-oxidants found in pomegranates make the fruit a cancer fighting machine. Studies have shown that consuming pomegranates, especially pomegranate juice, can reduce the risk of and slow the growth of certain cancers such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer. Pomegranates contain ellagitannins, which has the ability to prevent cancer cells from becoming mobile and spreading throughout the body. Pomegranates can also fighting existing cancer tumors by reducing blood supply to tumors, which decreases the tumor size and density. Decreasing the amount of blood flowing to a tumor limits the amount of nutrients that the tumor receives.

Heart Health: Multiple studies have concluded that pomegranates can do wonders for the human heart. The rich anti-oxidant level in pomegranates decreases inflammation and helps prevent thickening of the artery walls as well as decreasing bad LDL cholesterol levels and blood pressure. All of this allows for proper blood flow and circulation throughout the body. This prevents the heart from having to overwork in order to make sure the entire body receives its necessary nutrition. 

Other Health Benefits: Pomegranates are rich in polyphenolic flavonoids, which is an anti-bacterial compound. Therefore it’s a great way to keep your teeth healthy by preventing gingivitis and cavity causing bacteria from accumulating in the mouth. Pomegranates also reduce inflammation through the entire body, help reduce diseases caused by inflammation such as asthma osteoarthritis. They are also a rich source of many nutrients including Vitamin A and E, fiber, iron, potassium and folic acid, all of which can help attain a healthy and balanced diet.  

Conclusion on Pomegranates

Pomegranates are not the easiest fruits to eat but the nutrition and health benefits they provide make it totally worth battling its hard outter layer. Although pomegrante is very tasty to eat in its solid fruit state, drinking pomegranate juice is much more convenient and provides the same nutritional punch. Pomegranate juice is also available year round compared to fresh pomegranates that are only available for about half the year. Pomegranates have been shown to be one of the healthiest and nutritionally dense foods for our bodies. If you’re looking for a fruit that can provide you with many nutrients and benefits for your body, then pomegranates are the way to go.
