What is a Pineapple?

One of America’s favorite tropical fruit, the sweet, tarty and juicy pineapple has many great benefits for our health. Pineapples provide many important nutrients to our body, including Vitamin A, C, calcium, potassium and manganese. It is also very rich in fiber and calories, with low fat and cholesterol content. However along with providing many important vitamins and minerals for our body, pineapples provide many other health benefits as well.

Pineapple Health Benefits

Prevents Illness: Pineapples are a rich source of Vitamin C, just one cup of pineapples will provide you with 131.4% of your daily needed Vitamin C intake. Vitamin C is known to prevent the common cold and cough, but pineapples are also capable of helping alleviate illnesses if you have already been infected. Pineapples contain Bromelain, which helps with mucus build up and helps suppress coughing. Although unlikely to cure illnesses on it’s own, it can definitely help with the symptoms and future prevention.  

Improves Digestion: Bromelain is also said to help with digestion. Bromelain is found in the core of the fruit and on the stems. They work by neutralizing the fluid and making sure that it’s not too acidic. It also helps with the secretion in the pancreas, which helps the digestion. Overall it is known to help with keeping the digestive track healthy and strong.

Strong Bones: Pineapples are very rich in a mineral called Manganese, which is a mineral necessary to build strong bones and connective tissue. One cup of pineapples can already give you 76.5% of your daily needed manganese intake.  

Prevents Macular Degeneration: Macular degeneration is the most common cause of vision loss for older adults. It’s a disease, which damages the retina of the eye and can eventually cause loss of sight. However it is proven that eating three servings of pineapples can decrease the chances of macular degeneration. Pineapples contain beta-carotene, which is good for keeping your eyes strong and healthy.  Although carrots are also great for  keeping you eyes strong and healthy, research has proven that fruits are better for keeping your eyesight as adults.

Anti-Inflammatory: Pineapples have anti-inflammatory qualities, which can help with pain from arthritis and other similar conditions such as carpal tunnel. It also works to improve these conditions, because it contains manganese, which strengthens bones.


When shopping for the perfect pineapple there are a few things to consider. Pineapples stop ripening once it’s picked so it’s important to choose a pineapple that smells sweet. You can tell if it’s sweet by smelling the stem of the leaf. The more ripened it is the more anti-oxidants it contains, so it’s important to grab a nicely ripened pineapple. The size of the pineapple doesn’t make much of a difference in quality, the only difference is the amount of edible flesh. Overall it’s no surprise that pineapples are one of America’s favorite fruits. Pineapples are not only delicious, but they are also very healthy and provide many nutrients. So it’d be a great idea to start adding pineapples to your diet, whether it be as a snack or as a dessert.
