With many health benefits to go along with the refreshing taste of dark chocolate, you will most likely feel a craving to go grab some dark chocolate after reviewing this article.

Is Dark Chocolate Good For You?

Dark chocolate is unanimously referred to as the healthiest chocolate option. Dark chocolate is known for its ability to lower blood pressure, lower the “bad” LDL cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of cardiac disease. Dark chocolate can also reduce the overall risk of cardiovascular disease due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The high level of fiber in dark chocolate is very beneficial because it helps one obtain a feeling of being faster and cause that feeling to last longer. Dark chocolate also contains flavonoids, a type of antioxidant, that have been known to protect the skin from harmful UV sunrays.

Dark Chocolate And Your Brain

 Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is very brain healthy because it helps improve the blow flow and circulation to the brain. There are also several beneficial chemical compounds found in dark chocolate that provide a positive effect on your overall mood and cognitive health. Phynylethylamine (PEA) is a chemical produced by the brain that gives you the feeling of falling in love. It also encourages the brain to release endorphins, which are known to relieve pain and improve mood. PEA is also found in chocolate, which means that chocolate can improve your mood as well as relieve pain and cause you to fall in love every time you consume it.

Chocolate Helps Improve Blood Flow

 The anti-clotting and anti-inflammation qualities of chocolate, coming from the cocoa ingredient, helps keep your blood vessels healthy allowing uninterrupted blood circulation. This results in a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes. Dark chocolate also has an effective combination of flavonoids and a low glycemic index that helps the body efficiently process insulin and prevents spikes in blood sugar levels.

Chocolate And Fats

 It is common knowledge that dark chocolate does have high fat content. While this is true, the fat contained in chocolate is not as bad as once thought. The fat within chocolate is made up of equal parts of oleic, stearic, and palmitic acids. Previously, chocolate fat was believed to increase the “bad” LDL cholesterol levels found in the body. But recent studies have concluded that only the palmitic acid, a type of saturated fat, results in increased LDL levels. Stearic acid is also a saturated fat but has a neutral effect on LDL levels while oleic acid is a heart friendly monounsaturated fat. Although the fat in chocolate isn’t completely healthy, it is much healthier than previously thought.

It should produce a happy feeling to know that chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is considered a healthy food by modern day health professionals. Of course, it is not recommended to eat dark chocolate as an entire meal but it is a very beneficial as a snack or dessert option. Be careful when searching stores for dark chocolate bars though, as they typically only carry candy bars that contain dark chocolate in it rather than an entire dark chocolate bar. While the dark chocolate found in a candy bar is considered healthy, that does not make the entire candy bar healthy by any means.
