What is Broccoli?

There is no doubt that broccoli is one of the healthier and more nutritional vegetables that is widely consumed by people all over the world. Broccoli is small tree shaped vegetable is part of the cabbage family and is very similar to the cauliflower. There are many different health benefits of broccoli from preventing cancer to providing different vitamins and minerals for our body.

Benefits of Broccoli

Broccoli contains many different vitamins and minerals that help our body function and stay healthy. Vitamins A and K found in Broccoli, help keep Vitamin D balanced. Vitamin D is important in the growth and health of our bones. Fiber (both soluble and non soluble), which is also found in broccoli, help with lowering cholesterol and improving digestion. Broccoli also contains vitamin  C, which help prevent the common cold and helps our body absorb iron.  It is also rich in calcium, which promotes strong bone health. Broccoli is also high in calcium, potassium and magnesium, which regulates blood pressure.

Along with providing many different vitamins and minerals, there are many other health benefits to eating broccoli. Broccoli contains lutein and zeaxanthin, which is shown to improve the health of eyes. Lutein is also shown to prevent heart diseases by preventing the thickening of blood arteries.  It is also shown to keep skin healthy and repair damages done to the skin.

Broccoli contains glucoraphanin, which can be processed by the human body into a certain compound that is shown to prevent cancer. The compound is shown to eliminate H.Pylori, which is shown to be a bacterium that triggers gastric cancer.  Broccoli contains a large amount of indole-3-carbinol, which is a powerful antioxidant. It is also shown to contain anti-carcinogen, which helps with the prevention of developing prostate, cervical and breast cancer.

Broccoli is an anti-inflammatory, because of its rich source of flavonoid and kaempferol. Broccoli has also been shown to maintain a healthy nervous system, because of the high level of potassium. It also helps our brains function properly.

Conclusion

Broccoli is a great source of nutrients and can benefit our body in numerous ways. Adding broccoli to your diet can really make a difference to your health and living. However if you want to get the full benefits of broccoli it should be either eaten raw or cooked at low heat for around 5 minutes. It should also be consumed in moderation, so it’d be best to eat it with other foods.
