Vinegar, a French word meaning “sour wine,” is the result of the fermentation process. During the fermentation process, bacteria and yeast break down the sugars in a food. In the early stages of fermentation the sugars turn into alcohol before they ferment longer and turn into vinegar.  While vinegar can be produced from many things, apple cider vinegar comes from apples. The main ingredient found in the final apple cider vinegar product is acetic acid but the vinegar also contains other forms of acids as well as a wide array of vitamins and amino acids.

Benefits Of Apple Cider Vinegar

The list of benefits that apple cider vinegar supporters claim is quite extensive. These benefits include, but are not limited to, the following:

-Killing head lice

-Lowering cholesterol and blood pressure levels

-Lowering the risk of heart disease

-Killing or slowing the growth rate of cancer cells

-Aiding the weight loss process as vinegar helps people feel full faster and can help prevent overeating.

-Aiding the digestion process by providing additional acids to help breakdown the food

-Soothing effect on sore throats since most germs cannot survive in the highly acidic nature of vinegar

-Curing hiccups

Apple Cider Vinegar And Diabetes

The effect that vinegar has on diabetes is the most studied benefit that apple cider vinegar has to offer. Research has shown that vinegar can help lower glucose levels by as much as 6%. This particular study required the participants to consume 2-tablespoons of apple cider vinegar right before bed, which seems to be the time at which vinegar is most effective since the body will be in a state of rest while sleeping.

Is Apple Cider Vinegar As Good As It Sounds?

While apple cider vinegar does sound like an amazing product, there is very little scientific or medical research completed that supports the numerous claims regarding the amazing benefits that it has to offer. For example, two commonly supported benefits of apple cider vinegar are that it is effective against jellyfish stings as well as an effective disinfectant. Research was able to confirm that apple cider vinegar did help in these situations but it wasn’t nearly as effective as some people claim. The research also showed that there are much more effective remedies to these issues including hot water for jellyfish stings and common cleaners for disinfecting. 

Although apple cider vinegar has been shown to provide some benefit in numerous scenarios, it should not be the go to remedy for any and every situation. It would be a wise decision to consume a moderate amount of vinegar in addition to other remedies but relying solely on apple cider vinegar could pose some risks due to its extremely high level of acidity. The main ingredient in vinegar is acetic acid and it is quite potent. 

How To Consume Vinegar

The best way to consume vinegar is by diluting or mixing it with less acidic products. The most effective way is to dilute the liquid vinegar with water or juice before drinking it. Another popular way is to eat salads with dressing that has vinegar in it. Consuming vinegar straight can damage tooth enamel as well as the tissues lining the throat and mouth.
