What Is Almond Milk?

Since the Middle Ages, almond milk has become a very popular substitute for cow milk. Almond milk is a result of combining freshly ground almonds with water. This process produces a milk substitute that tastes similar to milk but has less calories and fat than milk from a cow without having to sacrifice the nutritional value.

Substituting for Milk

Almond milk is a great milk alternative because it has similar taste and nutritional values as cow milk but does not contain lactose or soy and is gluten safe. The main area that milk is king when compared to almond milk is protein. One serving of cow milk has roughly 8 grams of protein while almond milk has only 1 gram of protein per serving.  If you do make the switch from cow milk to almond milk it is important to make sure you alter your diet in a way to ensure you continue to consume enough protein on a daily basis.

Almond Milk Nutrition

Almond milk is a great milk substitute because of all the nutrition that it contains as well as what it does not contain. Almond milk is full of omega-3 fatty acids (great for your heart), fiber, and beneficial vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, manganese, magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, and calcium. At the same time, almond milk does not consist of saturated fats, sugars, or cholesterol as well as having low levels of of total calories (40 calories per serving), carbohydrates (2 grams per serving), and fats (3 grams per serving).

Almond Milk vs. Soymilk

Soymilk does contain a high level of protein but does not contain as high levels of essential vitamins and minerals that are contained in almond milk. To make up for this, soymilk is often fortified with additional calcium and vitamin D to try and bring the nutrition level up to par with cow’s milk (same with rice milk). On a taste basis, almond milk is more popular compared to soymilk and rice milk.
